Explanations of the Lines of Prometheus Unbound Drama

“Monarch of Gods and Daemons, and all spirits but one, who throng those bright and rolling worlds which thou and alone of living things behold with sleepless eyes! Regard this earth made multitudinous with thy slaves, whom thou requite for knee-worship, prayer and praise, and toil and hecatombs of broken hearts, with fear and self-contempt and barren hope”.

Reference and Explanation

“These lines have been taken from lyrical drama ‘Prometheus Unbound’, written by P.B. Shelley”.

These lines have been uttered by Prometheus who is the symbol of human soul or human mind or the portrait of Shelley himself. Here Prometheus is addressing Jupiter as the Monarch of all living beings, Gods and Daemons, but not of Prometheus, viz; the human mind or soul. He wants to say that though Jupiter is the supreme power, but he cannot change or control human mind. Further, he says to Jupiter that you and I watch the world with sleepless eyes, because human mind or soul is not allowed to sleep; then he says that whatever I have observed to see the earth which is full with your slaves. You compel them to bow before you and give you their prayers, praise and worship; but what is the output of their obedience, what you requite them for their hecatombs is nothing but the fear, self contempt and fruitless hope.

“Whilst me, who am thy foe, eyeless in hate Hast thou made reign and triumph to thy scorn”.

Reference and Explanation

“These lines have been taken from lyrical drama ‘Prometheus Unbound’, written by P.B. Shelley”.

In these lines Prometheus is calling himself the enemy or foe of Jupiter and says that there is the extreme contempt into the eyes of Jupiter for me and in that hatred he Jupiter has become blind and considers himself the reign and triumph to that blind hatred of Jupiter.
