The purpose of
culture is to make the man perfect and that perfection springs from the
scientific passion for pure knowledge and the moral and social passion for
doing good. When these two passions, passions for pure knowledge and passion
for doing good are combined, they create the inward peace and satisfaction and
suppress the animality and draw and draw nearer to complete spiritual
perfection.
Culture is
connected with the idea of sweetness and light and a man of culture is molded and
shaped by both religion and poetry. Religion perfects the man on the moral side
and poetry is an idea of beauty which beatifies the nature of a man and makes
it perfect on all its sides.
Though the
desire in man for perfection springs from religion and the religion is as
Mathew Arnold calls it, "the voice of the deepest human experience".
Culture is growing and becoming a general expansion towards
perfection so the motive and sanction of religion also obligation to man to
promote the kingdom
of God, yet the religion
is not sufficient for a man to achieve the perfection.
As religion is
the source of development in a man similarly, poetry is the essence of social
development which excites the love and sympathy in a man. It enriches the inner
feelings and the passion for doing well. It makes us understand what is
beautiful and graceful in things and thoughts as well as in life.
