Origin of English Drama and Its Development


Drama is a mode of emotions and out let of human feelings. It is the imitation of an action and it excites the feelings of pity and fear and gives the delight and instruction to mankind.


The history of drama is the history of interaction among the author’s imagination, the actor’s skill and the spectators’ expectation. Drama was developed in 6c. BC and it originates from church worship.

In the beginning, drama was performed only on special occasions and religious days, and its basic purpose was to worship some super power. There was nothing else, but the praise of Gods and their heroic deeds.

Drama is the branch of literature and as a piece or unit of poetry is called a poem, similarly when we choose a single unit drama, it is called play. The development of drama is in logic order, in cycles and it originates from four types of plays.

  • Mystery plays
  • Miracle Plays
  • Morality Plays
  • Interludes
First was introduced the liturgical plays, so called from their being an extension of the liturgy or church service.
